Black Horse 04:28
The ocean can have my ashes, Salt water on my bones The water I keep inside me, Erupts into the world When I’m gone, when I’m gone, when I’m gone I’m a wave, I’m a wave I’m a black horse I’m a wave, I’m a wave, I’m a black horse… The pressure, it folds us under, Sweat seeps from my palms You can send a plane between two worlds, It won’t change what’s in your lungs. When we’re gone, when we’re gone, when we’re gone I’m a wave, I’m a wave I’m a black horse I’m a wave, I’m a wave, I’m a black horse… With a voice that sounds like the universe inside a shell… She says ahhhhhhhhhhhh… I’m a wave, I’m a wave I’m a black horse I’m a wave, I’m a wave, I’m a black horse…

If you talk about heaven Chances are you’re not going Some people talk about heaven Heaven I’ve got a handful of heartbeats So do a sparrow and a lion We use them up when we’re ready to go To heaven But if you think about heaven Chances are you’re not living Repent your sins in confession To get to heaven Live your life like a human Drift along in denial Address it all when you’re desperate to go To heaven In my next life I will be a palm tree We’re all racing from crazy We’re all addicted and lazy

about

"Black Horse" is the second single taken from "Salt an Atlas", half/cut's sophomore LP. Eschewing the neurotic complexity that defines much of the band's catalogue, the song began life as a mid-rehearsal challenge to write a 'pop chorus'. The result is a soaring ode to precarious mortality and innate human fragility, finding vocalist Jessie Warren - as always - at the proverbial water's edge, inverting the classic 'white horse' metaphor to reflect the inevitability of both tide and time. Recorded by Neil Thomason and mixed by Tim Whitten (Powderfinger, The Middle East, The Church), "Black Horse" symbolises a point of transition for the band, who have hopefully succeeded in their pop chorus efforts here.
