Sink in Deep 03:56
Mum and Dad in the front seat I sink in deep Are we there yet? Are we there yet? The lightning starts up We drive a little slower And lose an extra hour Two ducks in the back seat I sink in sweet Are we there yet? Are we there yet? The fighting starts up Then we cross the border And lose another hour I sink in deep… Red haze in the distance It’s bittersweet Are we there yet? Are we there yet? So we take the back roads To avoid the fires And lose another hour While I sink in deep, I sink in deep, I sink in deep, I sink in deep… This is my world I exist in my world This is your world we exist in your world This is our world we exist in our world This is my world I exist in my world

Cricket 02:45
Bandaged fingers, heaven’s tired hands We’re all just mammals, in over our heads Stubborn as a shadow, heavy on my back Stubborn as a shadow, clingin’ to my back “What to do with my guardian angel,” the bush kangaroo said, “The rosebud seems weak, in over her head.” I’m here, I got this, but please turn the cricket on, I need to sleep I’m here, I got this Buy him a dog, teach him to love again We’re taking shots, he’s taking chances I’m here, I got this What to do with our guardian angel?

Ghosties 03:55
Love is a let down, you let me down love I‘ve taken years to heal, I’m still holding the gun When to let go, when to hold on We’ve both moved on, we’ve both moved on (x2) I know, you know, You’re in the ward, we talk But you seem fine to me The drugs make you repeat your words, My word! Now you’re attracting birds But you sound find to me, Yeah you sound fine to me. Your life it’s left me, it’s left me out love, It took me time to feel, how do you turn it all off? When to push through, when to hold off We’ve both moved on, we’ve both moved on. (x2) I know, you know, You’re in the ward we talk But you seem fine to me The drugs make you repeat your words, My word! Now you’re attracting birds But you sound find to me, Yeah you sound fine to me. (x2) You attract birds, I turn off street lights, you attract birds, I turn off street lights… I know, you know, You’re in the ward we talk But you seem fine to me The drugs make you repeat your words, My word! Now you’re attracting birds But you sound find to me, Yeah you sound fine to me. (x2)

S.I.N. 04:16
You’re the ghost in my mind I won’t leave I hold on to my memories You fall, you stall, you spill, you kill while we watch You grieve, you bleed, you need, you plead while we watch You take, you feed, you breed, you dream while we watch You Take, you fake, you preach, you cheat while we watch, while we watch I’m a black skull in the earth’s eye I see the world as truth drowned in lies The moon, the view, the pod I knew The moon, the room, the pod I knew

I built you up to be a house, but I never came home I saw you as the strongest bridge, so I jumped right off I pictured you as a fixing pill, and I spat you out You are not a rock, you are not my rock What category are we? What category are we? We’ve fallen in-between What category are we? We’ve fallen in-between What category are we? We’ve fallen in-between You are not a rock, you are not my rock.

I was never strong enough to call you out -> to call you out You said you’d take me home, you’d take me home -> you’d take me home The cab pulled into a place I’d never seen, you loaded me in Laid me in a bed I’d never met Then you climbed in Waking in the night Waking in the night, are you okay? Waking in the night? Waking in the night, are you okay? BOYS BOYS BOYS your mother wants to talk to you…

Black Horse 04:28
The ocean can have my ashes, Salt water on my bones The water I keep inside me, Erupts into the world When I’m gone, when I’m gone, when I’m gone I’m a wave, I’m a wave I’m a black horse I’m a wave, I’m a wave, I’m a black horse… The pressure, it folds us under, Sweat seeps from my palms You can send a plane between two worlds, It won’t change what’s in your lungs. When we’re gone, when we’re gone, when we’re gone I’m a wave, I’m a wave I’m a black horse I’m a wave, I’m a wave, I’m a black horse… With a voice that sounds like the universe inside a shell… She says ahhhhhhhhhhhh… I’m a wave, I’m a wave I’m a black horse I’m a wave, I’m a wave, I’m a black horse…

B.F.O. 05:28
Like planets grow, the coral glows Before she dies, she turns to white My head ducks under, my body sinks under I hear the hum, I hear your hum I push the soil, I move the soil With my arms, with these arms The forest murmurs, the forest talks Where do we go? Where will I go? Strings of birds spell words, lead the way Your dust builds worlds, your dust builds worlds Lead the way, lead the way, lead the way… Your dust builds worlds, your dust builds worlds Your dust builds worlds, your dust builds worlds (I’m an exhausted) Echo, Echo I’m in the soil, hello, hello I’m a dead star, let go, let go I’m a smoke trail, follow, follow I’m a blue whale, bellow, below I’m your conscience; I know, you know, I know I’m in your blood, I flow, I flow, I flow I’m an exhausted, echo, echo, echo Echo, Echo, Echo…

about

"salt an atlas” is the sophomore album from Melbourne half/cut. Contradictions abound. It is at once a pop record, full of intimacies and memorable hooks, and also a polyrhythmic sprawl reflecting on collapses both ecological and interpersonal. It begins on a family road-trip, and ends in the void.

With a title drawn impulsively from a list of palindromes by singer Jessie Warren, and a sound both refining and subverting the timbral template of 2016’s “ecco locale”, it’s songs were workshopped, dissected, discarded and revived by the band over the span of years.

Recorded by long-time collaborator/ridiculous idea tolerator Neil Thomason, and mixed by Tim Whitten (The Middle East, The Necks, Art Of Fighting), it arrives on the back of first single “cricket”, which was Triple J Unearthed’s first “weekly feature” of 2021.
